Dear Amelia,

I would be very grateful for your help with the repair of my Tag Heuer watch.

My partner and I bought matching watches in 1996 as tokens of our commitment to each other, before civil partnerships were introduced. We have both continued to wear them ever since. They have been serviced by Tag Heuer over the years and had the batteries changed when needed.

When my watch started to lose time earlier this year, I sent it to the Tag Heuer service centre in Manchester. However, it was returned with a brief message that it wasn’t possible to repair the watch because the parts required to restore it are now obsolete.

I am shocked to be told that parts aren’t available. There are plenty of vintage Tag Heuer watches for resale, so clearly parts are available in many cases.

I would appreciate your help to press Tag Heuer to find a way to repair it so I can wear it for many more years to come.

Dear V.B.,

You bought Swiss-made quality watches believing they would last the entirety of your lifetimes and are a tribute to your relationship. In addition, you paid almost £1,000 for the two watches, the equivalent of around £1,890 today.

However, there’s no guarantee that watches, or anything for that matter, will continue to be made in the future, or the parts required to fix them, no matter how much they cost or how much you treasure them.

Your particular model of watches, I’m sad to say, were discontinued only a few years after you bought them and it appears the replacement parts are extremely hard to come by.

However, following my involvement, I’m delighted to tell you that Tag Heuer has managed to source the required parts to fix your watch.

A spokesman said: “The watch in question was discontinued over 25 years ago, so the repair parts have run exceedingly low and some have run out.

“However, we have managed to find a few parts through different sources and we can happily confirm that the customer service team have made contact with your reader and can repair the watch and will do this free of charge.”

It’s unclear what will happen in the future should you or your partner need further repairs, but Tag Heuer says you should contact it and it will endeavour to help you.
