Marks & Spencer has been criticised for selling a “posh” egg mayonnaise and watercress sandwich for £6.

A standard egg and watercress sandwich from the retailer costs just £2.65 - making the “posh” version more than twice the price. Jane Hawkes, a consumer expert said she would “love to know” what was in the sandwich to make it so “posh”.

Ms Hawkes added: “Pushing up prices to cover costs is one thing, but taking the proverbial is another.

“Cost-conscious customers could well decide they are happy with their favourite budget lunchbox filling – at a quarter of the price.”

A description of the sandwich says it contains a whole sliced egg with mayonnaise and salad cream, alongside watercress and pepper in nine-grain bread.

The “posh” version contains 166g of filling according to M&S, compared to 115g in its standard offering.

M&S has been criticised for selling £6 "posh" egg mayonnaise and watercress sandwich

The shop launched the deep-filled range earlier this year as part of its 2024 café menu.

A £5.50 prawn and mayo sandwich and a £6 smoked salmon and cream cheese sandwich are also included in the range, alongside a gluten-free cheddar sandwich, which costs £5.25.

For vegans, the avocado and “Rainbow Veg” sandwich, which also retails for £6, contains layers of salad with avocado, baby spinach and a basil dressing.

Social media users said that cost of the sandwich showed that the “country is finished”, complaining that the £6 price was “ridiculous”.

One social media user joked: “Fun fact: The word posh here actually costs you an extra three quid.”

Another said: “M&S has figured out human nature. Put a shop near a train. Make it quick and tasty. And everybody grabs two.”

An M&S spokesman said: “Our deep-filled Egg Mayo & Watercress sandwich in our M&S Café has over 250g filling which includes luxurious egg mayonnaise combined with salad cream and chives for a richer flavour.

“This indulgent lunchtime option is proving to be a real customer favourite that can be enjoyed in our Cafés or on the go.”
