A rescue cat getting comfortable with her new owner the minute she was adopted has melted plenty of hearts online.

When rescuing a pet, it can be nerve-racking wondering how long it will take them to adjust to their new normal and feel comfortable in the different surroundings. That's exactly what Jeremiah Carter was thinking when he adopted Ellie the tabby cat.

Carter, of Phoenix, Arizona, rescued the cat in March and he told Newsweek he was initially warned that she was "very shy and timid" around people. But he really didn't have anything to worry about because she seemed to settle within minutes.

He shared a sweet clip on TikTok (@ellie_thetabby) showing the cat fast asleep in his arms just moments after leaving the rescue center. The clip has delighted internet users, generating more than 1.8 million views and over 442,100 likes on TikTok at the time of writing.

"Right as we got home, she napped for a solid three hours in my lap," Carter said. "But after that, she was super playful and sweet and curious about exploring the entire house.

"Seeing how quickly she settled didn't really surprise me that much because I'm a cat person through and through, and I've had female cats before. They're all just looking for a safe and calming presence, so if you give that to them, they'll love you forever."

After settling into her forever home almost immediately, Ellie started to let her true personality shine through. Needless to say, Carter loves her curiosity and energy.

Ellie enjoys exploring everywhere she goes and meeting new animals at every opportunity. "She doesn't have a bad bone in her body," Carter told Newsweek.

He wasn't expecting the clip of her napping on the journey back to her new home to generate so much attention online, but he's been amazed by the reaction to it. If anything, he truly hopes it will encourage more people to adopt and give a shelter animal a second chance at life.

Ellie has shown that whatever fears a person might have about rescuing a pet can quickly be undone. With the right family, pets can feel at ease and show what they're really capable of.

Carter continued: "It's been a really positive reaction online since I shared the video.

"People have reached out to talk about their experiences when adopting their animals, and some have commented and said they've adopted because of this video, so that was awesome to hear."

In just a matter of days, the adorable TikTok clip has amassed over 2,400 comments, and one user wrote: "Oh man that first sleep after knowing you're loved, adored, and wanted."

Another TikTok user responded: "The adoption nap! It's the best thing to watch."

While one comment reads: "My cat was knocked out in 10mins on the road home from the shelter, they do adjust quickly."
