The supermarket chain Wegmans has issued a recall of its bagged Food You Feel Good About Pecan Blend because the products may contain an undeclared allergen.
According to a press release published Tuesday, the 16 ounce packages were sold at Wegmans locations and have a best by date of March 27, 2025. The supermarket said that the product could contain almonds, a tree nut allergen that is required to be listed on a food products label under the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) guidelines.
The UPC code for the recalled product is 0-77890-31040-3. Customers who have purchased the pecan blend can return the item to the customer service desk at their local Wegmans location for a full refund.
Wegmans has over 110 brick-and-mortar locations across Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Newsweek reached out to Wegmans' press team for additional information via email.
There are nine major food allergen groups recognized by the FDA that are required to be listed on food products. Eight of the allergens were established in 2004 under Food and Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act, which includes milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans. Sesame was added as the ninth major food allergen in 2021 under the Food Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research Act.
According to the Public Interest Research Group, 154 foods were recalled in 2023 due to the presence of an undeclared allergen. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 6.2 percent of U.S. adults and 5.8 percent of U.S. children have food allergies.
Food allergens are required to be clearly labeled in the ingredients list on products. Symptoms of a food allergy reaction can include hives, flushed skin or rash, a itchy sensation in the mouth, face or tongue swelling, vomiting, coughing or wheezing, difficulty breathing or abdominal cramps. Some allergic reactions cane become life threatening if the reaction leads to anaphylactic shock, per the FDA's website.
A recalled was issued earlier this week for packages of Emerald Kettle Glazed Walnuts sold at Publix after it was found that the product had undeclared peanuts, almonds and pecans. The food product was manufactured by Flagstone Foods, LLC.
Publix said in a release that an "investigation identified a limited number of incorrectly labelled packages were produced during the manufacturing process." Customers who purchased the recalled items could return the packages to Publix for a full refund. The product was not sold at Publix GreenWise Market locations.
