A makeup hack, which was bought to the attention of the masses by a beauty creator, has sparked discussion among viewers online.

Beauty brand manager and content creator Tori Los, known as @skincarewithtori, took to TikTok on August 27 to showcase the simple yet intriguing technique that seemingly tricks the brain into thinking a person isn't wearing much makeup. The clever illusion, which hits on the trend for minimalist beauty, has been viewed more than 2.7 million times and has led to mixed opinions from viewers.

Viewers were able to see Los, who is based in New York City, wiping off makeup from her nose. Accompanying the demonstration is an overlaid text that reads: "One time I heard a makeup artist say that not wearing makeup on your nose tricks people's brains into thinking you're not wearing a lot of makeup. So now I always wipe my nose off before I leave the house." The video has since been liked more than 94,000 times.

"My page has been a really fun, creative outlet and a way to share things I have learned throughout my time in the industry," Los, who is a brand manager at Tata Harper Skincare, told Newsweek. "I'm really just a girl who is inspired by beauty products: textures, color. I love all of it—and I've found so much joy sharing online.

"Anytime a video goes viral, I know it means it really resonated or was interesting to a large group of people. I'm always grateful for those moments!" Los added.

Her approach to makeup taps into a broader trend toward more natural, minimalist beauty looks, which come under the umbrella term of the "clean girl" aesthetic. By strategically leaving the nose makeup-free, the technique creates an overall impression of a lighter, more effortless appearance.

The concept behind this hack is simple: without the continuous coverage of makeup, the face appears less heavily adorned, giving off a more natural vibe. "I think it actually works," Los added in the post's caption.

Grace Moser, a beauty writer and founder of the lifestyle blog Chasing Foxes, told Newsweek about the effectiveness of the hack.

"It really just depends! If you have a foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly, then it's going to work for you," Moser said. "However, if you use makeup to make yourself look more tan, or you deal with pinkness in some areas of your face, like the nose, then it's not going to look quite right if the nose is left uncovered."

For those with a foundation that blends seamlessly with their natural skin tone, this hack could indeed make their makeup look less detectable. However, those who rely on makeup to adjust their skin tone or cover imperfections on the nose might find this technique less effective.

The online reaction to Los's video speaks to a growing desire for makeup techniques that highlight natural beauty, as more people seek out ways to achieve that coveted "no-makeup" makeup look. While many viewers have praised the hack, several have shared why they think it would not work on them.

"Unfortunately, I have strawberry nose and it's my biggest insecurity," one viewer posted, while another added: "Cries in rosacea."

"It would look so obvious if I did this," a third viewer shared.

A fourth added: "What about my contour [because] my nose is wide as a chopping board?"
