President Joe Biden calls Donald Trump’s claims of a rigged trial ‘reckless’

Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee and now convicted felon, has said the guilty verdict against him at his New York hush money trial is “tougher” for his wife Melania Trump to accept that it is for him.

Speaking to Fox News on Sunday, Trump also said that while he personally would be “OK” with a jail sentence, his supporters might not accept it.

“I don’t know that the public would stand it,” he warned.

“You know, I don’t... I’m not sure the public would stand for it. I think it would be tough for the public to take. You know, at a certain point, there’s a breaking point.”

The 45th president was convicted on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records by a Manhattan jury on Thursday over his part an election conspiracy that involved covering up a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, the adult film star whose story of an affair threatened to derail his 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump will be sentenced on 11 July, just four days before the Republican National Convention, where he will be formally be invited to accept the nomination to take on Joe Biden in November.

Elvis, Churchill and Jesus: The people Trump compares himself to

“Not even Mother Teresa could beat these charges,” Trump wailed outside court last week.

Quite why a nun would need to silence Stormy Daniels is beyond me but here’s a list of all the other famous figures from world history to whom the convicted felon has compared himself, not always entirely plausibly.

Former Manhattan DA does not think Trump will serve jail time

Cyrus Vance Jr, who served in the office from 2010 to 2022, expressed that opinion on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning.

“The president has made this a little more complicated by having been found in contempt 10 times during the court,” Vance said.

“But I think that with the proximity of the Republican Convention four days after his sentencing, and then, if he is the candidate for the Republican Party, the proximity of the election, I would be surprised that he would be sentenced to any imprisonment.”

Michelle Del Rey reports.

Truth Social: Trump calls on Supreme Court to intervene in his sentencing

Here’s the latest raving from Trump on social media:

“The ‘Sentencing’ for not having done anything wrong will be, conveniently for the Fascists, 4 days before the Republican National Convention. A Radical Left Soros backed D.A., who ran on a platform of ‘I will get Trump,’ reporting to an ‘Acting’ Local Judge, appointed by the Democrats, who is HIGHLY CONFLICTED, will make a decision which will determine the future of our Nation? The United States Supreme Court MUST DECIDE!”

“Fascists” seems to be a new favourite word from a man repeatedly accused of parroting Hitler and expressing admiration for dictators.

Truth Social: Trump thanks Boris Johnson for defending him after hush money conviction

Trump has thanked the shameless former British prime minister for defending him/parrotting his talking points in the wake of his hush money conviction.

The former president shared a Daily Mail column by Johnson in which the latter called the trial “a machine-gun mob-style hit-job”, presumably in the interest of advancing his career in North America, a move also recently attempted by his short-lived successor Liz Truss.

“Thank you Boris Johnson!” a beaming Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
