A college student has gained viral attention after sharing a predicament that many people can relate to: discovering during a long car journey that he had left something important behind.

Seven hours into a 300-mile trip with his parents, who were helping him move his belongings from a storage unit, Ethan Furey realized he had forgotten the most crucial item—the key to open it.

As his parents drove, blissfully unaware of the oversight, Furey sat in the back seat unsure of how to break the news. But instead of panicking, he did what many young people do when faced with a dilemma: he made a TikTok.

In the video, which has now been viewed over 1.9 million times, Furey, from California, expressed his internal conflict. "When is it an appropriate time to tell my parents I forgot to bring the key to the storage unit 7 hours into the road trip they're doing specifically to move my stuff out of the storage unit?" the text overlay read.

"I was traveling from San Diego to San Luis Obispo with my parents to move stuff out of the storage unit into my new college house," Furey told Newsweek. "I was in an apartment as a sophomore in college and now I'm going to be a junior in a bigger house. About 7 hours into the drive, only 10 minutes away from the storage unit, my mom asked me if I brought the key."

TikTok users reacted with humorous advice on how the student could handle the situation.

One viewer said: "I don't want to be overdramatic, but have you considered getting out of the car at the next stop and running away??"

Another person wrote: "Your best option at this point is to open the door and do a tuck and roll."

A third TikToker offered a more practical solution: "You casually say, oh, we have to stop at Walmart and get some bolt cutters."

Thankfully, no running away was necessary. Furey said: "I posted the TikTok and then told my parents. They called the storage place and asked if they could cut the lock. Their locksmith was five minutes away from leaving, so we needed to get there super fast. We got there just in time, and he cut the lock for us for $10. We had to buy a new one for $30."

Furey was delighted with the response to his video. "I knew I would have a funny comment section if I posted the video, and it definitely worked. The video landed on 'parent TikTok,' and all of the comments from parents are so wholesome to me. Everyone was very helpful with legitimate answers and also hilarious with the funnier ones," he said.
