The mother cat had tried to shepherd her two little ones along a path beside the lake, but the tranquillity was broken when one kitten veered off-course, eventually ending up in front of the video's creator. Several viewers online suggested that the mother cat may have been trying to lose her kittens.
Newsweek consulted Mikel Delgado, a cat behavior expert with Rover, on the whether of female cats are known for abandoning their kittens.
"Sometimes cats will abandon their kittens," Delgado, who is based in California, told Newsweek. "It could be because the kitten is not healthy, the mother is inexperienced or stressed, or they gave birth in a place that does not feel safe."
